If you're handy or know someone who is, I think you can cut off the end and
add a groove for the cable. (It sounds like you have a J-tek shifter for
your Alfine?)

Wacky suggestion:
Get the full set of bar end cork grips, and put a left bar end pod into
the left, unused, grip/bar end on the bike, and use the hole on the pod
arm to hang your keys (or anything else from). Could be a handy attachment
point for something.
