That was my first thought. Try holding the housing where it enters the
stops with one hand while turning the bars with the other and see if the
noise goes away.

As far as the Shimano being a custom ,one-of design, I cannot say , but it
would be worth it to check any markings on it and look it up from a place
that offers angular contact bearings.
Cartdrige bearing headsets use what is called "angular contact" cartridges
. These are are designed for ver
My Quickbeam headset lasted 10 years before I rode it on 9 miles on Sonoma
Gold crushed limestone paths in two rainstorms. Now it's crunchy. I had to
replace the chain, too.
I was going to replace the headset, but after reading this thread, I think
maybe I can just service it. Thanks! That woul
Now I'm thinking about headsets...again...prematurely, most assuredly.
I like my Ultegra headset very much. It does a simple job without
complaint, and it's quite good-looking. (I wonder if that's ever been said
of me.) The issue, should it ever become one, is the cartridge bearings.

Actually, in 2001 when I ordered my Riv Road, Grant/Rivendell was
installing Chris King "No Logo" headsets at the time which was a very nice
little perk that I would have been very happy to pay for. I have CK on 3 of
my bikes but my resurrected Peugeot is doing just fine with a Tange
Falcon...
Glad the fix was so easy. All too often we over-worry these things. FWIW,
the no-longer-made Ultegra headset on my Atlantis went 9 or 10 years, with
only occassional attention. I changed to the Tange roller / ball headset
while doing some other fussing about. It just seemed like time, after
+1 for the Tange/IRD roller + ball headset. I've got it on the Chicken and
it's worked great so far.

Being a reader of Jim Langley and his cool page on silencing mystery bike
noises, I remembered that noises can sound anywhere on the bike, but come
from a totally different area.
So I tried poking around and found:
Creaky stem in the steerer tube?...nope...very stable no matte
FWIW it is also quite common to get a creaking sound from your shift cable
housing in the stops when you pick up the front end and turn your handlebars

Fwiw I had a similar creaking on my simpleone, but when I swapped from soma hwy
one bars to albastaches the creaking went away. No adjustment to the headset at
all. So who knows.

lungimsam, what you are describing sounds to me like a bar/stem interface
creak, it's quite common. . Headsets , especially like the FSA, can last a
very long time .
What are your bars and stem ?

Perhaps I am just lucky, but have had only one HS failure in 35years of
riding. My 1988 racing bike still has the original Chorus HS. When I
replaced the original HS in a 1984 Trek 620 (Sturmey Archer?) I went with
Cane Creek. Their 1" HS is well made and very nice looking. Trouble free

The service life of a headset can be considerable - I've got close to
40,000kn on a Shimano 105. Serviced every year or so with new bearings.
I'd imagine there's years of life left in your headset. A service might be
a good idea,

The FSA headset we use is a really, really good value--far nicer than 90
percent of the headsets available thru the '70s, '80s, '90s, and everything
since. I can't recall a single problem with one--the creaker below is the
first anything I've heard, and it's possible that all it needs is grease-

Just wondering if 2k is the limit on these things, or is this a
good-for-10-years kinda headset?
I don't know what to expect from FSA headsets. maybe I will
Why doesn't Rivendell outfit their frames with Chris King headsets? They
look much nicer than FSA's & are issue free.
