I select my gears, then choose the mix of rings and cogs I need to get
them. For a "gofast" road bike ("fast is very relative) I like a 65", 70",
ad 75" right in the middle of the cogset. If I can get close steps with a
~40" low and a ~80-to-90" high, I'm happy.
On my erstwhile Ram I got these
I just swapped out to a 46-38-24 w 12-28 7spd on my go fast, from a
50-38-26 &11-28 as a winter project. I felt like the 50t was overkill and I
was swapping cranks for other reasons so I thought I'd give it a try. I
don't have any real riding time on this setup yet but on a steep downhill I
So long as we're on the topic of go-fasts... what front chainring setups
are people using? I've been eminently satisfied w/ the standard Riv'ish
setup of a ~46-36-23ish on triples and am very happy w/ my 45 1x on my
Saluki... But given that I'm limited to a 5 spd rear on my 120mm rear OLD
go
Most before work rides these days are on my gofast Trek 660. I love it! I
rode up the canyon today and was treated to two red tailed hawks riding the
thermals. I thought to myself that's what I feel like on this bike, like
I'm flying but err on the ground. Now i want a hawk in flight headbadge.
Robin Williams said that riding a bike was the closest you could get to
flying. On a nice back road with no cars around I definitely agree.
My go fast is a 1980's Proteus recently brought back to life after sitting
for 10 years due to a bent fork. I think after sitting all this time it
wants
I agree with Robin but then there's this. Just a bit closer to our
feathered friends.

My go-fast is the Roadeo I picked up a couple weeks ago, used to be a
Giordana (I swapped the parts over).
Road/tour: Riv Road Standard 650b
Off-road/tour: Schwinn KOM-10 with drop bars
Off-road: Foundry Auger
Way off-road: Specialized Fatboy
All my bikes are commuters, all but the Roadeo are
Redwood - unconverted recently, meaning back to 700c from 650b - Barlow
Pass tires make this go smooth & fast
Clem - commuting duties, grocery getting
84 Schwinn Voyageur - faux-rando, single speed
Trek 330 - 650b'd, needs to be built back up, but certainly go-fast
contender
BMC Monster Cross -
I love my go fast bike, which is my Roadeo. I did not ride it last night
outside, but rather have it hooked up to a stationary trainer in the house,
which I rode for an hour. Winter is my mountain bike time and I stuck a
trainer tire on the Roadeo for a month or two until it warms a little. I
I went fast today on my hunqapillar with clothes in the rear panniers in
case the road allowed me to climb higher before turning into packed slick
ice that I never ever trust drivers on, especially on a steep curvy canyon
road. Turned around and went really fast on my underinflated 2.1" Thunder
The only reason he grew the beard longer is for the air drag so the rest of the
peloton could keep up.

Patrick,
My go fast or slow fast is my Roadeo. With the 28 Grand Bois Cerfs, I can
wander off road once in awhile and not lose anything on pavement. The other
thing is that I am so tuned to the Riv handling that other brands just do
not inspire me.

I like your statutory minimum 4 proposal... Mostly because of conveniently
aligns to my own stable!
Saluki - commuter, all round
Bombadil - singletrack fun-coaster, commuter alternate
XO-3 - 'beater' (in the most endearing way), single speed
Bob Jackson - go fast
Is a fat bike somehow both
