In my experience with the Nitto m12 rack, the special bolts prevent the brackets on the rack from tightening against the cantilever brake arms so tight that the brake doesn't pivot. The $15 bolts, while intuitively do reduce mechanical advantage (although the m12 struts are somewhat pliable),
