If you are doing just rail trails then I would say go wide tires on the custom. However, if you are talking "trails," with baby heads and big roots, I would not abuse that beautiful custom. Get an older mtb with really fat tires. Jim D Massachusetts On Wednesday, February 19, 2

I have about 5-700 fast and comfortable miles on my Lierres. One tiny puncture flat (tiny in-and-out from something, I never found the foreign object), easily patched. If you're really worried about flats, try the Soma Xpress, Fatty Rumpkins or Marathon HS420s (in rough order of weight/puncture r

Albatross are excellent for long, multiple days in the saddle. I've done several hundred miles of the Great Divide MTB trail on them as well as shorter 3-5 day single track thru biking. With abandon, Patrick On Wednesday, February 19, 2014 6:31:05 PM UTC-7, Lesli Larson wrote: > > I'm really te

I'm really tempted to peel off the fenders and just try the widest possible tire as a way to explore a new and different side of the Riv design (it's made for a terrific city bike this year). How do Albatross bars work for multi day rides?? I have a spare pair of those as well but I'm thinkin

Presuming Pencil will fit up to a Hetre sized tire? That gives you choices of Hetres, Marathons, or Contis depending on what you want. If you're not climbing steep hills, the lack of tread will be fine. Cheers, David "it isn't a contest. Just enjoy the ride." - Seth Vidal On Wed, Feb 19, 201

For even nice gravel I am going to recommend the fattest tires that will fit. Yes you can ride gravel on 32 mm but 50mm is sooo much more comfortable and if you aren't getting all bumped around probably even faster. Is there a particular trail you plan to tour? I have found a great deal of var

I would see what the biggest 650b tire is you can fit in the Riv. Most likely a 38mm Lierre or a 42mm Hetre. You will not be able to fit the smallest knobbie 650b, nor will you really need that kind of tire for now. For the terrain and load you are describing, the Lierre or Hetre will be great,

This is exactly my advice - fatten up the tires, go back to Midges, use the Riv. For what you describe, I've had good results with smooth tires in 700C. For the price of a fixer-upper old MTB, you can get some pretty nice tires for the bike you already have. I would definitely keep the dynamo,

Rail trails are usually pretty civilized and if truly converted from a railbed have only gentle hills, and are quite wide. For a multi-day tour, I'd go back to your rando set-up and a rear rack or large saddlebag for gear. Bump up the tire width to whatever you fit under the fenders & you're

For the trails you're describing, your Riv should be fine with minor changes. I ride my Riv on hard dirt, crushed lime rail trails, and rough pavement, and 584x38 Lierre's (under fenders) have been fantastic. However, on loose dirt or anything technical, then you'd want a bike with 2" or bigger t

Sounds like a great idea! Underbiking is a great way to learn a LOT. Why remove fenders? I rode fenders on far more rugged trails that that and they were just fine. I won't run them with knobbies, but the only reason I could see for not running them is to fit a wider tire at lower pressure. Wit
