I wouldn't ride a Alba or similar bar without them ! You can mount Paul thumbies next to the lever if you wish. http://www.biketinker.com/2013/projects/reverso-levers-and-bar-end-shifters/ I prefer thumbies around the inside top inside myself as my hands are most often in the middle on up
