Rode Marathon Supremes (700x32) on the tandem for a few hundred miles.
They're like those dreams (nightmares) where you try to run but your feet
only move like molasses. I switch to Panaracer Pasela (non-TourGuard,
non-flatproof) which are much faster and cushier. And the Pasela is by no

I had the older Marathon HRs, which were pretty similar to the Marathons in
the article, on a Surly Cross Check a few years ago and never had a flat
once. Even ran over a stray piece of barbed wire! Those tires were
bombproof and prompted me to buy Schwalbe Mondials (on 36h A719s) when I

I commute year round on Marathons (Marathon Winter studded as appropriate)
because they are what they are. Roads along my route have gone through
cycles of transformation, from fair to really degraded and now partially
freshly repaved. At one point I had to be more prepared for "off-road" type
Good idea Stephen ... funny how whatever tire you ride you just end up
forgetting it anyways, and just ride the bike . Comparing tires is fine when
you are comparing them, but that gets old pretty quick as it is so narrowly
focused on but one aspect of the bike. Here isn't as much of a dif
Thanks everyone. I think I'll stick with Marathons for now. I'm generally an
"if it ain't broke don't fix it" kind of person. Maybe I'll try something
different when they (eventually) wear out.

Switched to compass barlow pass from marathon supreme. The barlows are
noticeably more comfortable and feel faster. But looking at my times on
familiar routes shows not actually faster. Zero flats with supremes same

I don't mean to sound evangelical in my praise of Compass and the new line
of Schwalbe tubeless-ready tires, but they're pretty great. A huge
difference for me (that's not possible for many rim brake riders) was going
tubeless. That in conjunction with the very intentional suppleness makes

Double your pleasure by running extralight Compass tires with a good,
modern sealant. I've had no flats on the very, very light Elk Passes
despite riding them on our acequia roads, full of goatheads, and on gravel.
I wish I could run my Elk Passes tubeless; that would indeed be the ne plus

I would say "No". I think they are fantastic tires but if you are expecting
a "life changing" event you, may be setting yourself up for a
disappointment. I notice a difference but I am also expecting it.

Mike,
You are tempting me to switch from Marathons to the Compass 26x1.75". Are
these really gonna change my life? I don't consider myself a tire
connoisseur by any means.
It's hard to find a lighter weight version of a 26x1.75" tire.
Thanks,

I always really liked my Schwalbe Marathons. That said, I like the Compass
Barlow Pass more. I am not necessarily convinced by all of the testing done
on any tire. I just wanted to try them and support somebody who I thought
was doing a good thing for bike rides by having them made. I don't know

I again wanted a fantastic riding, puncture protected tire, I would think
of getting them. They are excellent tires.
I eventually tried 650b GB Hetres and Compass Tires. Here are my
impressions, as best as I can remember
I rode the standard Marathons briefly and switched to Marathon Supremes for
probably three years of high mileage. I saw Compass tires mentioned on here
all the time and had to try them and they made the Marathon Supremes feel
like slugglish dogs. It felt like having an extra low gear added to my
The closest I have to a story for you is my friend who lives for city tires
on every bike he and his family owns. Cozy is not even a discussion (or
anything but clipless). He has the 35mm Marathons on his Tournado.
I will say in our long rides together, they are fast, however they may
ride.
