Many thanks for your observations. I've been using a Shimano for a thumb
shifter on my Atlantis but would like to move that to a Roadeo (with bar
ends) I'm building. Currently using Silvers as bar ends and down tubers but
no experience as a thumbie.

I use that combination and love how they work. That said, I have only used
them for old-school 8-speed configs and don't have a ton of miles on any
particular set. That said, set up as bar top shifters they are the most
accessible, intuitive and best tactile feel shifters I have ever used. I
If you are referring to the metal washer, I faced the rounded side
toward the shifter. That said, I'm not sure it matters.
