Yes, the geometry of the brake determines the path the brake pad takes to the
rim. Cantilever pads dive
I seem to recall that the rim profile was revised about the same time as
Longleaf had this run of 650b A23's made. That may be when the parallel
brake surfaces happened. I believe that's also when the updated the bead
hook to a more tubeless friendly design...

Given the great adjustability of modern brake pads, I find it difficult to
believe that a canti couldn't be squared to the rim. And, even if it was
initially not square I would expect it to wear toward a flat connection,
not the reverse. It is also hard to understand why Velocity would design
Given that the current A23 has parallel sidewalls, it doesn't matter
whether or not I was right claiming that my A23s a couple years ago were
parallel or not. I'm becoming increasingly convinced that I was simply
wrong about it. The only thing I'll point out to the why would they do
that?
Hi Bill -
I have spec'ed a set of wheels with A23 rims. I will be stopping these
wheels with a pair of calipers - known to some of us as sidepulls. But I am
intrigued by your comment about the slight V shape of the rim being ideal
for centerpulls and caliper brakes and sub-optimal for

Yes, the geometry of the brake determines the path the brake pad takes to
the rim. Cantilever pads dive as they go inward. The sidewalls of the
A23, tilt slightly in the wrong direction for cantilevers. The brakepads
strike kind of a glancing blow. It's not a major problem, but it
I read this thread with interest, as I am putting the finishing touches on
the Winter issue of *Bicycle Quarterly*. This issue includes a test of the
650B Velocity A23 rims. I checked the brake tracks of our samples, and they
are parallel, as they should be. So they work as well with any brake
The A23 with parallel brake tracks will very likely be my favorite rim.
That's great news that they are parallel, even if I'm a little confused on
what changed between the time I bought A23s a couple years ago and now.
Maybe nothing changed and I'm crazy? Wouldn't be the first time
I have one set of 650b Synergies, on the Bomba, currently with Fatty
Rumpkins...
But on my converted Ram, I built a 650b A23 wheelset and am running Hetres,
and really like the combination.
I'd moved my 700c Dyads to my Rom; I used to lament the unavailability of
the Dyad in 650b, but I
Do you have US or Aussie made rims? Not that it can't be production

i believe them to be Aussie. or rather to have been Aussie, since i sold that
bike.

That may be the difference... when they moved over here, they changed
up the machining a bit???

just checked my set of 650B A23's... they are parallel. Came from Anthony
at Longleaf. Unfortunately, they are sitting in a box waiting for my
custom to be built. I should mount up the Hetres just to see how they fit.

Micheal,
I have built both the Synergy and the A23 in 700C. The Synergy can only
handle 100 Kgf spoke tension without puckering at the spoke holes. The A23
is my new fav because it can be tensioned to 130 Kgf and it is still
available in off center drilling. The weight also drops. It was
I have a set of Hetres on the 650b version of the A23s. I found them
difficult to mount unless I used veloplugs, sometimes the bead wasn't as
high as it should be when mounted. I do not have the OC version of the rims
for the rear so I can't comment on them.
