Thanks for the positive advice. I will plan on using my existing XD2 with
9 speeds. I forgot to mention I am using a Deore RD-M591 currently with
the crank and 7 speed casssette.

I ran it for a while in 10-speed mode by changing only the cassette and

The XD2 will work nicely with 9 speed your 9 speed chain and 9 speed
cassette. In fact, I've had 4 different Sugino XD2 or the nearly identical
X600 and they were all only used with 9 speed drive trains, all worked very
nicely. I believe others will report that they even work fine with 10 speed
