[RBW] Set of 26" Synergy wheels

This is a request for help pricing a set of Velocity Synergy wheels - for the family of a friend who died riding his bike about 8 weeks ago.  He had a brand new - still with foam blocks on the outside of the hubs - set of 26 inch wheels - 32 spoke, DT Swiss, with Deore LX hubs, and the built by Rich Lesnik yellow sticker on the rim.  A new roll of rim tape is wedged in the spokes.  He had a small Surly LHT (46cm), so maybe these wheels were to replace what's on the Surly - we don't really know why he bought them.  The Surly is just a couple of years old and his other bike is a titanium Seven with 650C wheels.

Anyway, they were holding a yard sale today and when I got there, I saw the rims were priced at $40 and I told them 'no way' and to put them aside and I would find out what they're worth. 

What is a fair price for this set of rims?  And would anyone like them - (plus shipping, I think)?  They're going to sell the Seven on ebay so they can sell the rims there as well.
