Thanks, Howard. With fixed gear, I’m shifting to pedal retention and forefoot
pedaling, hense the need for a stiffener.
My wife reminded me we have 1/4” plywood Purebond (no formaldahyde, though who
knows what else is in there. My brain doesn’t like formaldehyde.). Cut inserts
out of that.A

In my quest to create a minimalist (including foot shaped) cycling shoe for use
with toeclips, I have found that a stiff, thick leather combined with a thin
plastic bit works quite well, but am curious if there is better material
(nylon/fiberglass and carbon shanks get mentioned as midsoles).
