Threading a steer tube is not a big deal with the right tools. It's not a bike shop capability normally, but most framebuilders and metal working shops have the right tools. Cut threads are plenty durable too, they are used extensively all over the Space Shuttle Main Engines. I've had it

Not really for the reasons you mentioned plus a few others. First the threading tool has be in total alignment with the fork steerer otherwise the headset is never going to tighten properly. Second, the tool itself is really meant to chase threads and may cut a few threads not for doing the
