I have used hit sensors on model ships with smoke bombs and fire crackers.  It is easy to do and very dramatic.  All you need is a 1/4 inch copper tube, a dowel with a hit plate to go in and a micro switch.  The switch is always on and attached to the end of the tube where the dowel keeps the s
