Rsync will can the file at one end calculating checksums of blocks.
At the other end, it will do a rolling checksum looking for matches -
note that this is a rolling checksum
The --list-increment-sizes command lets one give a subdirectory.
Unfortuantely, this seems to be less useful than I thought, because
the --remove-older-than command doesn't. It says:
Fatal Error: Increments for directory /misc/backup/subdir cannot be
removed separately.

Are you saying that you have gotten this error? If so, do you have a
(preferably small) repository that demonstrates the problem?
I've never ran into this myself, so I obviously haven't looked into it,
but if someone has a repository that I could look at, I'd really like to
fix this.
