I don't know what might have caused the problem, and it hasn't happened again.
Windows was not involved. I've never tried to use rdiff-backup under Microsoft
Windows or with any Windows filesystem.

Is there a reason why the -v2 etc parameters can't be entered after the
plain mode parameter?
rdiff-backup -v2 backup ...
vs
rdiff-backup backup -v2 ...
Took me a while to figure out why the latter doesn't work. :)
