Hello all,
Thanks to all of your responses, and particularly Rick’s confirmation of the
appropriate ranges for the SB50, it has become clear that these panels can not
be made to work with the SB50, and that the SB50 was the wrong choice for these
pre-fabricated systems, or perhaps better
Marco,
I called about this recently. They say it's in production now and
should be available through distribution by the end of the summer.

Hello Everyone,
The SB50's maximum input voltage spec it 57VDC. This should be considered an
absolute maximum above which the controller will be damaged in a manner not
covered by warranty. Our recommendation is to not apply a total Voc at STC of
more than 57V/1.25= 45.6V. There are transient
Not sure why you think that cell matching is an incorrect use for MPPT. That is
one of it's biggest advantages.

I didn't say it's an incorrect use. Please reread what I wrote. I agree it's
one of its biggest advantages.
But in Africa, once it fails it may be very hard to find a technician who
can determine what controller to replace it with if the SB50 fails. (They

Allan,
MPPT technology is for harvesting the most power possible from any
voltage being produced above the battery voltage, not the difference
between Voc and Vmp. Because of this, nearly every battery charging
system will benefit from MPPT chargers. The climate does not matter

Hello,
Why do you say that AGM batteries are a better choice?
I have been reading about the differences, and all I see (comparing DEKA Gel
versus DEKA AGM is that the cycle life of the AGM (at 50% DOD) is 500 cycles
versus 1000 cycles for the Gel.
The AGM seems to have better
Hi Walt,
You are right! Gel batteries will give many more cycles than AGM's.
And they cost more so you you are not getting an equivalent value by
them suppling AGM's.
A very big downside to Gel is if you accidently over-voltage the
battery, you can permanently ruin it. I have seen many
Hello Larry and others..
The slow charge rate for the Gel's you mention confuses me further. I had
just finished researching this last week when I was in Sierra Leone, where
we were setting up the DEKA 225AH Gel batteries on an Outback system, and
checking the charge rate.
I downloaded a
Hello Wrenches,
I have an 12-volt, 1.2-amp outdoor light that I want to power with PV and a
gel cell battery. What approx. 5 amp charge controller do you recommend? It
would be nice to also have a low-voltage cut-out and a timer. Thanks in
advance for your help.
Best regards,
Joel Davidson
I would recommend the Morningstar controller. There is a model (I don't
have the catalog here) with a good timer, and LVD and good environmental
controls, and electronic circuit protection.

Thanks for posting this, Marco.
Somehow I missed this story last week. Funny in an ironic, twisted way. A
friend of ours was in town visiting this afternoon. He mentioned that he was
considering buying some REC modules out of Norway... Good deal on them, etc.

Hey Larry,
Have you worked with the Techno Metal Posts (TPM) for 6 SCH40 (orSCH80) top

the defect in REC panels is the frame expands past the panel and can contract

if there is another defect, but that one would warrant a recall instead of
replacing a lot of panels. There was also an
