Yes it is done, there are controllers that do this. For an effective design the system should be able to collect and store the day time energy with out getting to hot. Perhaps a larger tank is required in most cases. The nightime loss could be estimated by the length of time of heat dump

Nicholas, You can certainly do that. Most newer controllers have a vacation function that will provide this. Another method is to put in a bypass to the check valve that you can open and the system will naturally reverse thermo siphon at night. Not much in the way of calculations other than
