Just a follow-up on this. I have able to get the batteries to accept a
higher and higher amp charge and the hydrometer indicates recovery is
taking place. However, in the last 15 hour session of charging (this
is being done in an unmonitored location overnight) the batteries off-
gassed quit
Hi Peter,
1) Only the DOT grant alternative to the ITC is due to expire. SEIA is
pushing for an extension. I couldn't be more impressed by this organization
and would strongly encourage everyone in this industry to join. There are
varying levels of membership and it costs some money but
Hi Hugh,
Based on your earlier number - regardless of temp effects - you were only
removing ~25% of capacity. You will need to lower your low voltage cut off to
improve performance.
Remember, as batteries cool actual capacity is reduced, so if 200AH is 50% @
25C it is significantly more
Hi Jamie and Dan,
Thanks for keeping up this thread! And sorry for being impatient.
Now, if the capacity 'loss' is simply due to reduced performance, is
it logical to say that one can push the battery to lower voltages
under low temperature conditions without actually cycling it harder

Re: [RE-wrenches] discharging Rolls batteries
I wonder why there is no temperature compensation on low battery voltage
settings like there is on charging set points. Do I just have to use the
generator much more?
I may be wrong but my understanding of the Outback gear is that the temperature
Hi Dan,
Good point.
A quick chart on freezing temperatures vs SG;

Hugh,
Sorry if you found my response limited but have been traveling since early this
am and don't have all information at hand, at the moment.
Regarding temperature effects on capacity, earlier responses are spot on as the
lower capacity is totally as a result of slower reaction times as a
Hi gang. This from Christopher Freitas.
One of our comrades is in need of your good thoughts, and the country where he

I do not want to turn this list into a fundraising venue, but please contact me

Thanks, Bruce,
I have lived with batteries for thirty years so I do know some of the
basic things but for most of that time I used secondhand batteries.
The last couple of years using expensive new ones I find that they
often perform less well. I would like to tap into the enormous

I have two questions about the Investment tax Credit (ITC).
(1) I understand that it has an expiration date of December 31, 2010. If
this is true, is it probable that it will be extended for another year or
more? Asked another way, what are the chances that it will be allowed to
expire?

More important than loss of capacity at low temps, (at least in my world), is the fact that battery freeze points rise considerably -- with a reduced State of charge... So you get a sort of double whammy... not only do you get less capacity, but they freeze easier.Dan BrownPresidentFoxfire Energy C
Bill,
On large arrays with combiners and sub combiners, will a disconnect
be required on both the inverter and array side? The fuses will
still be energized from the inverter side when the array is turned
off, from other string sets connected to the inverter. .

Not sure if we're talking about the same thing... but a friend of mine's computer got "hacked" and some malware (or something), sent spam to everyone on her address lists all addressed from her... they're out there.. dbDan BrownPresidentFoxfire Energy Corp.Renewable Energy Systems(802)-483-2564
