[RE-wrenches] Megger for array testing

2010-11-17 Thread Drake
Hello Wrenches, Looking through the archives on using a Megger for testing modules, it appears that it is best to keep voltages to 500VDC. I read all that I could find. Talking to a Sanyo representative, I was told that keeping test voltage under 600 would not void the warranty or be an is

Darryl, His present power system is 120 volt DC in his entire place, so he is looking for an inverter that will accept that and grid tie. >From my understanding the only 120 volt AC he has is to run the saw mill and he wants to reduce that with the solar that he has, seems that his battery ban

Thinking more about the Megger test of an array, is seems impossible, despite that fact I've been told it could be done. If I put the tester positive to the 500 V DC negative, that would put two 500 V sources in series for 1000 VDC. If I put the positive to positive, the resulting voltage to

Hello Drake, I think you should talk to a Sanyo Solar engineer to get accurate information. Every Sanyo and other brand UL listed modules must be dielectric voltage-withstand factory tested to 2 times system voltage plus 1,000 volts. I hi-pot test modules in the factory at 3,000 volts so they w

Bill, You stated below that a starwasher installed with an Ilsco lay-in lug violates the listing of the lug. Can you point me to where this is in writing, or does one have to purchase the UL standard? Best, Jerry Caldwell --- On Sun, 9/12/10, Bill Brooks wrote: > Finally, many of the modul

Joel You are correct about the UL testing requiring 2 x system voltage plus 1000 volts. The UL requirement is also to ramp up to the full voltage in 5 sec and held for 1 min, which I believe most meggers are capable of. The test is considered a failure if greater than 50 uA current is measured.

Meggerers, Although shorting the terminals to perform the megger tests may provide the most uniform voltage profile, it is difficult to perform on many arrays and adds unnecessary complexity to a test that needs to become routine for all PV installations. The appropriate way to perform the

[RE-wrenches] low batteries with a sunny island

Hi All Battery Friendly Wrenches - We have a situation I haven't crossed yet - we have a Sunny Island grid tied battery back system system with a 48 V battery bank consisting of eight 6 Volt AGM batteries. The charging breaker feeding the Sunny Island in the main electrical panel was shut off by a

August, Lots of golf cars are 48 volt. Know a buddy with one that would let you borrow his charger? Or maybe a repair shop would let you borrow/rent one for a day. Just a thought. Nathan Jones On Wed Nov 17th, 2010 8:54 PM CST August Goers wrote: >Hi All Battery Friendly Wrenches - > >We have a

C40 charge controllers used to have that problem too; if battery voltage dropped so low that it didn't think it had a battery to charge, the whole system just sits there crashed, batteries sulfating, sun shining(customer stewing) I'd just charge them on a 12 v automotive charger, 2 at a

Hello, August~ Assuming that you don't want to buy a proper (but costly) 48 volt deep cycle battery charger, here are a few suggestions: Find this Craig's List seller in Redwood City: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/bfs/2059216588.html and ask if they'll rent their 60 volt variable power supply

Hi Drake, Disclaimer #1: i do not recommend megger-testing an array (or module or string) unless you have an approved procedure from the module manufacturer for the installed configuration. Disclaimer #2: i am not the foremost authority on the list for this topic... Mr. Brooks? (Note: Bill's pos
