[RE-wrenches] FYI - John Wiles

The following was included in an email I got from John: "US Department of Energy funding for providing support to the PV Industry, inspectors and others was terminated on 1 March 2011. Questions via e-mail may be slow to be answered or they may go unanswered depending on available time. If you feel

Jay: I appreciate the desire to have a web site for the new products, but we can't even seem to find web sites for the old products. Solar World, Xantrex and I am sure others refuse to provide data for legacy products. Here in the information age we are getting information vacuum at both en

I don't know of any such website either. It would sure come in handy for me, writing renewable energy articles. I totally missed Midnite Solar's new battery capacity meter in my recent battery monitoring article in Home Power, just because I didn't know it existed and nobody carried it yet whil

Folks, I have a couple of new SunExtender AGM batteries that I will be using in a UPS application. My understanding is that I should cycle them before floating them out for standby service. Am I getting this right? How many cycles - to what DOD? Mark Frye Berkeley Solar Electric Systems 303 R

We almost had a house fire in the neighborhood a couple months ago from a parallel battery bank failurean aging 2x8 L16 48v battery bank (16 of them), and one bat in bank one got a short and thermal runaway. I teach in my firefighter safety classes that thermal runaway is really rare, but i

I have now been close to three battery fires caused by thermal runaway,  (the telecom industry has had many many more.  Before they got the controls to fix the problem..  Here my suggestion is limit the maximum current that can flow in a parallel circuit between batteries.  ___

I like the fused parallel idea; could save the system, and would make battery troubleshooting nice. I would suggest #6 jumpers with 50 to 60 amp breakers, so the system could be operated on just a few strings if needed. R. Walters r...@solarray.com Solar Engineer On Apr 19, 2011, at 8:29 PM

The broken record will now repeat himself yet again. Bussbars are the way to go, not across battery terminals but individual strings connected to a central positive and negative buss from which the inverter connection then runs. This allows fusing of each individual connection and also allows

Friends: I have seen 200 A T series fuses bolted directly to the battery terminals (I've even bolted a 175A breaker to a flag terminal!). Might this be a crude but effective method to obtain inter-array OC protection? Wm At 08:41 PM 4/19/2011, you wrote: I have now been close to three batt
