As Dan mentioned there are harnesses with both front and rear D-rings. For the
application you describe I would recommend using a tower harness that includes
a saddle with waist strap D-rings. I personally prefer the Guardian Tower Edge
harness. It is perfectly acceptable to use
D rings in places other than in the middle of the back are characterized as
positioning attachment points, and in almost all cases are not approved for a
connection point to fall protection systems.

Petzl is a good company and has been around for a long time. For climbing gear,
I don’t have much of their equipment, as I prefer Chouinard (now Black Diamond).
