The tax credit can be carried back one year and forward 20 years. Unless
the credit is extended, it applies to systems placed in service on any
dwelling unit by Dec. 31, 2016.

Hi Wrenches,
Since we’re on the topic of the ITC, I have another question someone might
be able to help with. Assuming that a system is placed into service prior
to the end of 2016, it should qualify for the 30% tax credit. Some people

Self employment tax is not income tax. It goes toward social security and
medicare. Nobody can take the ITC against these taxes. No big deal...

Kris,
Yes that is correct. If you look on the tax form 1040 itself, the logic

Hi all, I'd appreciate hearing about your experience with the Conext 5548 or

with one but am considering using XW 5548's for a couple off-grid installs. At
the same time I have no experience with the Schneider systems. O

This has been an issue on some of our systems, but strangely not most of
them. I have not figured out a correlation yet. We have dozens of pole

then some that ice up and are a real mess all winter. The only

Another thing that makes a big difference here in Colorado is to use dark
colored frames and cells as opposed to silver frames and lighter colored
cells. We get a lot of cold but clear days and dark color makes a huge
difference in how quickly shedding will occur. This same phenomenon will

Also, the Frigidaire washer is really delicate; I had one cooking

there was to put it on an Outback backup power supply, as the grid was

Older installs done by others but I have had chargers and electronic
failures caused by the modified sine wave inverters, along with some
electonic noise on audio equipment. I do not have these issues with OutBack.

BTW Dan. I have designed and installed power sheds here in the north with tilt

Pretty ugly if it's staring you in the face, but quite effective when the
bottom of the array is directly over the eave of the roof. Allow 18
I will back up your opinion that open back has not a lot to do with it. I have

Yes, I agree with Kris. The tax credit is applied as a deduction to line 44
tax (on taxable income) but the self-employment tax is then added on line
56. But the same is true of all other deductions, exemptions, and credits
too.
And it doesn't change the fact that if someone has no taxable income
My customers neighbor has 1.1k of 110W panels on a tilt up rack set at about 45° (Some 20° from the roof). Her array pretty much stayed clear all winter with minimal futzing. My customer has a 7.2k array (Four rows of six) in portrait, mounted on unirack solar mount on an asphalt tile roof at aroun

I just looked over my 1040 and indeed the credit is subtracted BEFORE the
self employment tax is added in. At first blush, it appears to be the
case. If you have enough 1099 income, the tax credit would apply to taxes
paid on that income...i think?

Of course we need to discuss the surroundings of any particular

Dan,
What do you mean by "tilt up racking". Would an example be a rack that adds 15
degrees to a 5/12 roof? Good idea (as long as wind load is taken care of) for
cold snow country (certainly for off grid) to get the tilt angle higher which
helps with snow shedding. BUT if it's super cold lik
