Years ago, when I was researching SB/SI microgrid solutions for a
Ted Turner high-end off grid rich man's lodge, John Berdner (at that
time the head of SMA-America) had made me the same recommendation:
that a small amount of PV be wired as a DC charge-controller-based

Gennys and battery settings are all good but if the battery died in the
genny or its out of fuel then all bets are off so things happen more often
then you might think. Backing up is insurance, like I said there are other
options out there.

Actually its much more cost effective to use charge controllers than GT
inverters for the PV input. Just price out a 4 Kw GT inverter of your
choice compared to a Midnite Classic for instance. It's in the ball
park of 25 cents/ watt savings, and that's not chump change.

Hi Mark
Set up properly with the 3 protection thresholds plus generator auto start you
shouldn't need any DC PV input. Seems a shame to spend the money on a charge
control etc when SMA has carefully provided a built in solution.
If you do decide to go that route you'll need to install a Shun
This seams to be a very common ovetsite by some solar pro's you are correct
if the system shuts down even in the case of an SI battery sensor or low
voltage the entire system is down, if there is a genny on site this may
prevent it if it has fuel. I see this issue and get asked a lot what can be

Hi Mark,
The Sunny Island has various battery protection modes and will shutdown
based on user programmable state of charge levels. Level 2 battery
protection will start the Sunny Island every 2 hours in an attempt to get
charge into the batteries. You should set this level up at times when

Hi Guys,
Just wondering about how a SI/SB microgrid works. If all the PV is
connected to SB inverters, what happens if the loads manage to drain the
batteries to their low voltage shutdown? Wouldn't the SB stop providing
the AC sync so then the SB wouldn't have anything to sync to even if
