One way to cure the freeze is with bringing the ground's heat to the tank. I
saw this done by digging a hole under where you want to place the stock tank.
Dig it deep eno

Daryl Thayer has the key to this: surface insulation. About 90% of heat loss
from an open body of water is from evaporation. There are black plastic balls
(about 5” dia) you can get to float on top in a layer. Blue foam works but
deteriorates in the sun. I know we are all about electrical and
Gary,
Is there already power to the tanks or are you looking for off-grid solutions?
If there is power then a simple tank de-icer has been working fine for me. I
built an insulated box with a hole in the top for filling/drinking for a 30gal
water trough, in hopes that it would use a bit less
Gary,
Try these folks. They're based in Wisconsin and make almost everything
in house.I'm sure they have something that can work for you.
They know a lot about aeration and de-icing.

Using an air bubbler works well.
It will make a hole in the ice formed overnight

about 30 years ago I fought this problem, Insulated the outside of the
tank, 2" floating blue styrofoam, cattle learn to pushdown to drink. I
used a solar thermal collector with I don't remember the rest, but today I
would use a PV Panel.

Gary,
This application comes up on this list from time to time over the years.
You may be able to review previous discussions by searching the Wrenches
archives as well as responses you may receive. I know that Keeton
Fisheries has been mentioned as a resource in the past.

Hello Wrenches.
I have a friend in need of a way to keep stock tanks free of ice during
winter months. Has any one had any experience with direct solar options
for this?
