Walt,
I would also offer that in a hot climate, MPPT in general is only useful in a
case where odd cell counts take the Vmp away from 24V nominal specs. That is,
MPPT was originally developed to harvest the voltage headroom between Voc and
Vmp

Not sure why you think that cell matching is an incorrect use for MPPT. That
is one of it's biggest advantages.

Northern
Allan,
MPPT technology is for harvesting the most power possible from any
voltage being produced above the battery voltage, not the difference
between Voc and Vmp. Because of this, nearly every battery charging
system will benefit from MPPT chargers. The climate does not matter

The AGM batteries are probably a better choice than gelled, but the
fact that some are down to 5 volts is the real problem.
A typical AGM will lose around 1-2% charge per month at 25 degrees

Hi Walt,
You are right! Gel batteries will give many more cycles
a couple of them

...And the Voc is present
Walt,
This morning I left a message on Rick Cullen's cell phone about this thread.
He called back, said he's on the Wrenches list as a manufacturer's rep and
he will check the thread and respond. So watch your Wrenches email before
taking corrective action.

I think you're right: it's hot enough there that the Voc never hits
the 57 v BLue Sky death point. Problem is, if you rewire those
modules for parallel, their mpp won't match the SB50. According to
Blue Sky's Tech bulletin #100214, it wants to track MPP between 33 v
-37 v. YOu could add
Walt..i believe those controllers will give you an MPPT boost going from
24V nominal in which eqautes to 44Voc in to 12Vnominal out.in this
scenario 57Voc max is sufficient.
The sharp panels you mention series together will exceed the 57Voc and
should cause trouble for the charge

If the SB50 is like other Solar Boost products, there is a zener diode
on the PV input that will open if the voltage exceeds the Voc maximum.
The controller will not burn up or be fried but you will have to
replace the diode. Why it has not happened yet
