From my understanding the OCPD needs to be within 18 inches from the
positive terminals... some will use class T fuses instead of breakers for
cost...

Always as close to the batteries as practical, remember is does not have to
be at the end, between any dattery in that string, as a safe precausion at
the 24 volt point is nice at it will keep the peak voltage at 24 vs the
bank of 48 if in open position.
