It may be interesting to develop some sort of an automated terrain loader for
this kind of stuff. I'm not sure whether tms based mapping tools can be
combined with this, but osmaps has some ways to convert between openstreetmaps
and opensim based maps. Also there is now a terrain url loader

I found a usefull workaround -
converting the data to dxf and from there to ogre mesh via sketchup
and using the terrain as a mesh - now i can walk across countries :-)
