You can use Redhat Hardware Compatibility list (HCL). But forget PCI Winmodems !!! My
modem is Creative Modem Blaster 56K (ESS 2898 chip) and it doesn't work with Linux!
I suggest any standard External Serial Modems.

I've several problems with RH 8.0. 2 of them are :
1-Xmms can not play MP3 files. But plays Wav.I think there is a problem with plugin.
2-When I write a code and design an interface with glade, during compile ./autogen.sh
gives error that you should install gnome-common-autogen from gnome
