if he has python2 installed, that could be causing problems. i had this
problem, but on a 6.2 machine - it turns out there was an extraneous rpm.so
in /usr/lib/python1.5/lib-dynload, i removed that and it fixed the problem.

could somebody please tell me what basic steps to take to see if a machine
is being subjected to a DoS attack - I don't need to detect DoS agents on
the machine, I've done that and it's clean.

I'm looking for open source software that will detect multiple types of DDoS
attacks on a machine. Searching brings up various kits that detect DDoS
agents on compromised systems, but that isn't what I'm looking for. Any
recommendations?

i'm also about to do a major version upgrade: 6.2 --> 7.0, and possibly
5.2 -->7.0 as well. does anybody have a list of common mistakes to look out
for, etc? Obviously, I'm going to be backing up all data first, but I'd like
to do this with as little headache as possible. I'll be doing the upgrade
check your glibc version, if you upgraded to 2.2, you might need to download
and use compat-glibc, from what i understand.

i'd imagine the rlogin, rsh, etc. stuff would be disabled by default in
newer releases of Redhat, although I'm not sure. Have you checked
/etc/inetd.conf ?
You should probably use SSH anyway, sending cleartext passwords over a
network is asking for trouble...

I don't know a single thing about it, but it sounds like "Expect" might be
the tool you need. I'm planning on checking it out soon, I was just reading
about it in one of the monthly Linux mags.
