Group id Problem

Dear List i have a problem with ownership on my /etc/shadow file... whenever i change a password for an user , my group owner for shadow file changes to 42. though 42 is a restricted gid, i dont have an id in my machine.. how would i stop this to happen. Regards Ganeshh
