I am new to Linux just having installed RedHat 8.0 for the first time on my
legacy home PC. I was able to run install in graphical mode without any
problems up until the Xconfigurator portion of the install. The first time
I installed it (I formatted and started fresh a couple of times) it didn't
properly detect my STB Powergraph 64 video card. It detected it as a STB 64
(generic). So, I changed it to the correct type and the results were that I
lost all video- absolutely nothing was displayed once it entered Xwindows on
boot up. I didn't know how to switch to text mode so I formatted and
reloaded. I completed setup again but this time I accepted all the defaults
and tested the video settings before proceedings. When the test screen
displayed, everything was displayed just fine... the background, icons, etc
were all crisp and clear. When I answered "yes" that I saw the screen
properly the display resets back to the previous setup screen but it isn't
useable because the video is shift all the way to the right and I can only
see the help information. I, somehow, got it to complete the setup and can
boot into text mode without any problem, but now, I am trying to complete
the X window setup. Using xconfigurator, I have manipulated the video
settings: resolution, refresh rate, etc. but no matter what I do when I
switch to X windows nothing is displayed but a cursor on a completely black
background. So, my question is... how do I know what the settings were when
the "test" screen was displayed during setup and what is the easiest way to
restore them.

Thanks,

Greg
