When I installed Redhat 7.2, I chose 1024x768 32 bits as the screen
resolution. Using Windows, I am used to changing the screen resolution
on the fly. Is this possible with X? Does GNOME provide a control
for screen res and depth? If so, I cant seem to find it. Thanks.

I need to upgrade my compiler from the gcc 2.96 that came with my Redhat
installation to gcc 3.2. Can someone tell me where to find the RPM for
this? Or do I have to get a gzip file from GNU?

I am trying to learn about the Gnome user interface but I seem to have
some problems:
I click on Start Here in the Gnome panel. I click on the Help tab and
select the Gnome User Manual. When I click on the introduction I get an

I think that I found my problem with the Gnome help files. The HELP tab
in Nautilus lists all the help files as SGML. When I checked the
directory /usr/share/gnome/help/gnome-users-guide/C/ all the files are
in HTML. Any idea why the correct files were not installed?

I need to upgrade the compiler to gcc 3.0.4. I have found the tarball.
Where should I install it? Redhat has it in /usr but GNU defaults to
/usr/local/. If I run config with --prefix /usr will it put it in
/usr/gcc-lib? Will it install over the current version? I would like

I finally used Shields Up to test my ports and found that everything is
stealth except port 5000 UPNP. It is closed but reports that it exists
(which is bad). Anyone know how to disable it? Exactly what is it good
for?

I need to install a PCI IDE controller card to allow me to add a couple
of more disk drives. Since they all work with Windows, I need to choose
the model based on availability of drivers for Linux. I want a Ultra100
card that is cheap. Any suggestions?
