Authentication failure when logging in by telnet

Hi, Im having a problem with my linux box and would appreciate any help. To cut a long story short, when i telnet to the box i get the login and password prompt but authentication fails for all users. When I ftp to the box, authentiction succeeds for all users as it should. Any pointers to what may have caused this and how to fix it?   Regards   John
