I am not sure what kind of smb.conf Redhat comes with, but if the
smb.conf is not setup sufficiently out-of-the-box, the smbd daemon may not
be able to start when your system first starts. So you could see if smbd
is running:
ps -x |grep smbd
Then start it with: smbd -D
