mkinitrd is what creates these files. It's manual page does a good job of
explaining how to use it. The simplest

I believe it is still available, but is considered dangerous.
In order to read/write ext2 file systems from a SCO machine, I wrote a few
utilities using the e2fsprogs libraries by Ted T'so.
