Thanks to Bret and Mikkel for their pointers. The issue was the fact that
my command prompt in my script did not match exactly with what telnet
actually gave me.

How fast does a normal telnet connect from the machine running the Pearl
program to the machine the program is trying to connect to?  Also, did you
double check to see if the command prompt you get when you telnet in
matches the one Pearl is expecting?
