Thanks to everyone for the help. It turns out the two Linksys switches are purring away happily and everything is hunky-dory; nothing wrong at all.
Id10t error as you might expect... the server I couldn't see was on a 192.168.1.0 subnet when the rest of the house is on 192.168.0.0. Naturally it wouldn't answer to the addresses I was pinging...
