I am using IBM A21p and i tried ACPI and my advise is: NOT PLAY WITH IT
;-)
I suppose that ACPI support in Linux is still very not stable at all, so
if u enable it, u may excpect strange things like no LAN, no SOUND,
system hangs and many more..

I am using the Compaq 1700T laptop, where the ACPI support is important.
