I've found that AMANDA is only good for backing up data on smb shares, I
don't think you would want to use it to try a bare metal recovery of a
windows machine.
I used to backup some smb shares with it and I remember that some files
never got backed up cleanly.

I wouldn't call backing up to zip disks an accurate proof that you have
it working. you can setup amanda to run backups to the holding disk.
but it's still going to be a tough proof.
