I figured it out, it was easier than I thought, I just put the install CD back in and did an upgrade and ticked off everything so that nothing got upgraded, it found the ncr53c8xx driver and replaced the adaptec one, now with hdparm -t /dev/sda I get 7.?? instead of 1.?? and 0.9? :) and yes I
