root server list up to date?
Hey Peter -
Good question... It is something you should update, IMO, on a 'fairly'
regular basis. I have a job that runs monthly via cron which
dig /var/named/named.ca

The information provided by you is great but somehow I did
not understand
this command
dig /var/named/named.ca
Will u pls elaborate on the same?
dig is part of the bind-tools. It's a nameserver lookup utility that gives a
list of root-servers if no argument is given.
Try man dig for a
dig /var/named/named.ca
This produces the wrong information, as others have pointed out.
Try:
cd /var/named
wget ftp://ftp.rs.internet.net/domain/named.ca
You probably want to play with some wget options to fine tune this (or use
ncftpget).

Is it ok if dig comes through like this when doing dig /var/named/named.ca
My question is the first set of lines don't have it like 360, they
have it in Days, Hours, Min, sec.
. 5d23h35m46s IN NS L.ROOT-SERVERS.NET.
. 5d23h35m46s IN NS
Will u pls elaborate on the same?

Is the file /var/named/named.ca which contains the root nameserver info
something that server admins need to keep up to date?
Or is the file Red Hat packages in their RPMs current enough and we don't
have to worry about it?

Hi Daniel,
dig /var/named/named.ca
I just tried this but it seems to be missing MOST of the root name servers!
E.g. The /var/named/named.ca that comes with Red Hat list lines like:
360 IN NSA.ROOT-SERVERS.NET.
A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. 360 A

Hi Michael,
Attached is a script I run monthly via cron that updates the root.hints
file. Before trying to run it, please be sure to edit it for your
situation. (paths, file names, etc.) It is mainly derived from the
example in the bind howto.
Perfect! Thanks :)
