You may also want to modify your X resources in .Xdefaults with:
xosview*net: true
xosview*netBandwith: 1375000
xosview*netInColor: yellow
xosview*netUsedFormat: autoscale
and run xosview. It's a little more CPU intensive, but I rather like it.

How about gkrellm? It's its own panel, but it is completely modifiable.

"Modem Lights" ain't cutting it... It provides no eth0 information at all.
