In my case this wasn't an upgrade from RH8. It was a clean install on a
brand new computer with newly formatted hard disks.
I'm still deciding what to do. Maybe I can get a serial cable and login via
the modem port somehow from another machine...?

Hmm. I had a similar monitor wake up problem; it only occurred when I
"upgraded" from RH8 to RH9. After warm-booting on several occasions, (I
realize that you would prefer not to do this), I decided that I should
try a 'clean install.' Result: Monitor 'wakes-up' just fine now.
