i havent recompiled my kernel in a long time ... nor have i rebooted ..
well when i did today i noticed ipx and applatalk being loaded as modules
..
so i went and deleted them from /usr/lib/modules ( or whatever)
now i get syslog messages complaining on reboot

look at /etc/conf.modules, there should be an entry about IPX and
appletalk, I don't really remeber.. but there is a way to turn them off.
on the other hand but this is thin ice , I personally would cp
conf.modules to conf.modules.bak ( or helma or whatever) and mess around
