There are two main builds of serial port <--> motherboard connector
cables.  One goes across the 10 pin mboard connector like

13579
2468-

and the other goes

12345
6789-

The easiest way to get it right is to use the connectors supplied.
Otherwise, look it up in your manual and get a meter and check your
cable.
