Hi Brian, I don't really know too much about this, but I'll throw my two cents in anyway!
If can gain the neccary cvs access rights, why not just create a new branch? Anyone in the future can clearly determine what changes where made since the branch was made and people who rely on the old version of the code can still grab what they need with the proper tags.
