Well, I'm assuming that the same machine is working under some other
os. Check on how ttyS0 is set up in your system. Sounds like it is
configured as the loopback device in error.

Either your modem is operating in HALF duplex mode, or it is echoing back
all characters sent to it... (Local Echo).
