I do believe that AMANDA will do this for you. It is only bound to
actual partitions if you are using dump. Set it to use GNUTar.

I am currently backing up a server (where AMANDA is running) with 3
entries:
        /home (own disk)
        /var  (own disk)
        /etc  (part of a file system)

And a Win 98 machine share (I'm at home and don't know the actual
disklist entry.)

I can get you more information on Friday if you would like it.

   You better use System Imager for this. This is for linux specially and it works well. This is free software and you can search for this.
