server, and not kill the server? For example, if I login on F1, startx
on F2 and fire up a ppp session, can I go back to F1 without shutting
down the x server and the programs (ppp) that were running in it?

CNTL+ALT+F# will take you to a console screen.
Assuming everything is default, alt+F7 should take you back to X.
